Barbara
received her Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Western
State University and
her Master of Social Work from Western Michigan University. She is
licensed as
a social worker by the state of Michigan and is a member of the
National
Association of Social Workers.
While
still in college, Barbara worked as a Nurse’s Aide at a
long-term care
facility, where she acquired a deep appreciation for the issues facing
the
aging population. She went on to serve professionally as Social Work
Manager at
a long-term care facility and rehabilitation center for five years. For
the
past 30 years, she has worked as a successful individual, relationship
and
family counselor. Her own experience with her parents’ aging
and death
increased her desire to work with aging individuals and their family
members
Barbara’s
philosophy is that everyone is at some
point in the aging process. When we think of it that way, we realize
that aging
family members have the same desire to be in control of their lives and
want be
seen as vibrant, wise, motivated and capable of making important
contributions
to everyone around them. When these abilities fade, it is a challenge
for
everyone involved.
Again
and again, Barbara has seen that supporting
aging parents on their journey can be a tremendously positive
experience. It
can provide a unique, life-changing opportunity for healing and growth
– for
everyone involved.
